If your student-age children prepare (or have someone else prepare) their own individual income tax returns as they take those steps towards independence, please make sure they do NOT claim their own dependency exemption if they still qualify as your dependent.
This is a matching item for the IRS, so if your child’s return has already been filed claiming the exemption, your tax return e-file will get kicked out because of the duplication. The only way we can resolve this is to get a copy of your child’s return, amend it to remove the exemption, file your tax return as a paper copy claiming the exemption, and then deal with IRS inquiries if they can’t manage to match all of this up in a timely manner!
Of course we’re happy to help, but these unnecessary steps can be avoided if your child’s tax return is correctly prepared.
We are here to assist you if you have any questions!
